1L: Law School, Year 1: Torts

Our second expedition as Star-Splitters was in the field of the law. A former student, Chris Yoder (now a Kansas City-based attorney), led us through the elements of the torts of battery and assault and false imprisonment, which we exercised in hypothetical cases of his invention and those invented by the students. Along the way, we also learned the art of keeping a commonplace book, a topical way to make sense of experience.

During demonstration week, students became associate attorneys in a law firm, tasked with analyzing a packet of discovery material (all invented by Mr. Yoder), including a police report, a deposition, a blueprint of a basement, a receipt, hand-written notes, etc., and then presenting oral arguments to a panel of judges (Chris and me).
